Solid Deck

Solid Composite Decking

WPC decking can greatly enhance an outside area improving its attractiveness and convenience and providing opportunity for greater use.

At home a patio deck is great for entertaining or relaxing outside, letting you use your garden when it would otherwise be too wet and muddy.
If you run a business such as a bar, café or restaurant a deck can enhance your premises, increase your working space and improve your customer offering.

All our composite decking boards are made of 60% recycled hardwood fi bres and 40% recycled polyethylene together with bonding agent, colour tint and additives. Additives include an anti-UV agent to help the boards resist colour fade and mould. Our solid core boards feature an anti-slip walking surface with narrow spaced grooves and an attractive plain surface that resembles timber planks. Unlike our hollow boards their ends do not need to be capped.

Strong bearing capacity

Solid core boards offer greater strength and better sound absorption and are often favoured for commercial applications and decks that will be subject to heavier use and larger loads.
Solid board are a high quality product manufactured to exacting specifi cations and are warranted to be free from material defects in workmanship and materials.

Great Colours that Resist Fading

The manufacturing process results in a high level of colour consistency although some variation in colour may be apparent across boards from different production batches.

The anti-UV agent helps the boards to resist colour fade and ensure your deck continues to look its best as time goes on.

Simple to clean and maintain

Our WPC decking boards are hard-wearing and easy to maintain. The composite material used in their construction means the boards do not rot, splinter or warp like many traditional timber boards.
Also unlike many traditional timber boards our boards do not need to be regularly sealed, stained, painted or waterproofed. They are easily kept clean by sweeping and the occasional use of a jet hose.

Solid Deck Installation (reference)

Solid Deck Installation

1: Build a supporting substructure

Make sure that the area to be decked is flat and stable. Boards must not be laid directly on the ground but should be fi xed to the joists of a suitable supporting substructure. This will vary, for a domestic patio deck we typically recommend a simple concrete base and our own WPC joists.
The concrete base should be at least 10cm thick and have a slight slope – we suggest a gradient of 1 in 40 – that runs away from the property to allow for the run-off of water that collects under the deck.

The WPC joists should be fastened to the concrete base using screws through the joists and plastic raw plugs in the concrete base. They should be fi xed so as to create parallel, regularly spaced rows in-line with the slope of the concrete base, again to allow for the run-off of water.

The maximum recommended space between joist rows depends on the angle at which you intend to lay your boards in relation to the joists, but should never exceed 40cm.

A gap of at least 8mm should be left between the ends of joists and a fi xed object such as a wall and of at least 10mm between the ends of joists at butt joints. These allow for proper drainage and temperature expansion.

2: Fix boards to joists

Our WPC boards are easily fastened to the joists of a supporting substructure with the help of our stainless steel screw and plastic Card slot system.

Start at the outside of the area to be decked. Place your first board and screw it into each joist it crosses with a countersunk decking screw of suitable length.

Then fit Card slot into the groove along the side of the board and screw them into the supporting joist with the screws provided, one Card slot for each supporting joist.

Fit your next board by sliding it onto the card slot used to secure the first board and fi tting another set of card slot to secure the opposite side of the board, again one card slot for each supporting joist. Follow a similar process to fix subsequent boards attaching the final board in a similar manner to your first.

As an alternative to using card slot, our boards can also be screwed straight into supporting joists using decking screws through the center of each board.

Unlike timber, WPC decking only requires one screw in the center of each board as they do not warp or bow.

Boards must be properly supported!

The ends of boards must be fully supported. No overhang or cantilever is allowed. At butt joints – where the ends of two decking boards meet, this may mean doubling up on supporting joists.

Minimum spacing requirements It is recommended that a gap of at least 7mm is maintained between the sides of adjacent boards to allow for drainage and expansion due to temperature increases. The use of plastic card slot helps ensure these gaps are maintained.

Gaps of 8mm at butt joints – where the ends of two boards meet, and of 10mm between the edges of boards and objects such as a wall should also be observed for similar reasons.

3: Finish your deck

Having fastened your boards all that remains is to tidy up the sides of your new deck with our WPC skirting and corner trims which can be used to hide the unfi nished end of boards and supporting joists.

Our skirting trims can be screwed directly into joists with wood screws. A gap of at least 8mm should be maintained between skirting trims and the ends and sides of boards to allow for expansion due to temperature increases.

Corner trims can be applied subsequent to skirting trims to achieve a finishing touch by screwing them directly into decking.

We recommend that you do not fully close your deck to allow for the free circulation of air and drainage.

Care and Maintenance

Following our easy-care tips will ensure that your decking looks fresh and attractive for years to come.

NORMAL CARE
Once ECO Hollow decking is installed, periodic cleaning is necessary to keep it looking great. For dirt, dust and other residue, simply brush with a soft broom. If necessary, wash the decking down in the direction of the grain with a garden hose or a pressure washer, no more than 1,500 psi.

PROBLEM

SOLUTION

Mould and Mildew

Clean away leaves and debris that promote mould growth. Ideally, you should clean the dirt off your walls before mildew starts, because the dirt is what feeds the mould. If mould/mildew appears, a deck washing product and a detergent can be used. Never mix any other cleaners with the deck washing product. Vinegar can be used to kill the mould.

Rust stains/stubborn spots

Use a cleaning product containing oxalic or phosphoric acid base to lighten or remove the rust or dirt. Product may need to sit on stain 10-15 minutes.

Ice and snow

If you reside in a cold weather climate and would like to avoid accumulating snow/ice on your ECO Hollow deck, use calcium chloride or safety rock salt to melt it. Remove the ice and snow with a plastic or wood shovel as it begins to melt.

Oil and Grease Stains

As soon as the spill has occurred, use hot water and dishwashing detergent, to remove the stain. Be sure to thoroughly rinse the detergent off the deck with hot water. If need be, use a light stainless steel scourer.

Berries and Wine Stains

Mix bleach into hot water according to the bleach-packaging label. Scrub the stain lightly and rinse thoroughly. The stain may not disappear entirely.

Ink Stains

Inks may be permanent. However, scrubbing with hot soapy water may lighten the stain. Rinse thoroughly.
