PVC Waterproof Deck

PVC Waterproof Deck

PVC plastic decking is a faux wood decking material complete with woodgrain texturing and available in a limited range of colours and styles. It is made to give your deck the look of natural wood without the issues wood can have such as warping, cracking, splintering and demanding a lot of care and maintenance over the years.

The upfront cost is more than woods such as cedar, redwood and pressure treated lumber, but not as expensive as some tropical hardwood decking. However, since the maintenance costs are minimal and you won’t be buying a stain and sealer every couple of years, PVC decks cost less when averaged over 20+ years.

PVC is polyvinyl chloride, a very common plastic. Most of the material used in decking is called cellular PVC due to the structure of the plastic which makes it stable and resistant to cracking or warping. Decking PVC / PlasticThe PVC used to make this decking is mostly virgin plastic, meaning it hasn’t been recycled. In that respect, PVC decking isn’t as green as the composite which contains 80%-95% recycled materials depending on the brand. However, PVC is recyclable.

Extremely Durable

One of the major advantages of PVC decking is that it is a highly durable feature. PVC decking is made of a plastic resin, so it makes it hold up well to all of the elements and heavy foot traffic. Once you install a PVC deck onto your property, you will never have to worry about rain or snow damaging your deck. PVC is also moisture resistant, so it is the perfect material for your next pool deck.

Low Maintenance

When it comes to PVC decking, it is one of the most low maintenance options on the market. Compared to wood decking, you will never have to paint or stain your deck to extend its lifespan. One of the best features of PVC deck is that it is highly stain-resistant. All you have to do to clean your PVC deck is to hose it down a few times a year.

PVC Deck Installation (reference)

INSTALL THE FIRST PLANK

• Fasten outer edge of the first plank at each framing support from the edge using deck screws.
For a complete fastener-free surface, the L-Bracket or Cortex can be used on first and last boards.

INSTALL THE FIRST PLANK
POSITION CONCEALoc FASTENERS

• Fully insert the CONCEALoc fastener into grooved edge of the plank. Screw hole should be lined up with the centre of the support joist.

POSITION CONCEALoc FASTENERS

• Install provided screw at 45° angle through the fastener and into the joist while applying pressure on the fastener.

• Install one fastener and screw at each joist.

• Make sure fastener is in full contact with the edge of the plank and the screw is holding the fastener down tight to the deck board.

Install provided screw at 45° angle
COMPLETE INSTALLATION

• Place the next plank into position against the fasteners. Slightly raise the outer edge of the plank being installed and slide it onto the fastener until the plank contacts the spacer tab. When properly installed the inserted plank should be in contact with the bent-forward spacer tab at the left end of the clip. To achieve this use a scrap piece of decking at least 24” in length and use it as a tamping block to drive the plank further onto the clip and the screw will fully engage the plank to the spacer tab if not already in contact.

HOW TO INSTALL AT BUTT JOINTS

• Joists at butt joints must be doubled up for proper fastener attachment.

• Install fasteners as detailed below. Note that the two clips on the right are shifted approximately 1/4” to the right of centre on the joists. If this is not done the spacer tab may fall within the gap of the butt joint.

HOW TO INSTALL ON DIAGONAL

• When the deck is located in a corner of the house, start with a small triangular piece of decking in the corner and work your way out.

• Offset the clip 1/2” to the right of a centre line of the joist, so the screw will not exit the side of the joist when driven.

HOW TO REPLACE A PLANK

• Make two parallel cuts down the centre of the board to be replaced, then remove the centrepiece.

• Using a small pry bar, remove the remaining pieces of decking from the tabs.

• Using a reciprocating saw, remove the tabs on the side of the board with the screw heads showing.

• Position new board into place, and drive onto remaining tabs.

• Once the board is set into position, secure the loose edges with L-Bracket, Cortex, stainless steel, or high-quality coated deck screws.

Care and Maintenance

Following our easy-care tips will ensure that your decking looks fresh and attractive for years to come.

NORMAL CARE
Once ECO Hollow decking is installed, periodic cleaning is necessary to keep it looking great. For dirt, dust and other residue, simply brush with a soft broom. If necessary, wash the decking down in the direction of the grain with a garden hose or a pressure washer, no more than 1,500 psi.

PROBLEM

SOLUTION

Mould and Mildew

Clean away leaves and debris that promote mould growth. Ideally, you should clean the dirt off your walls before mildew starts, because the dirt is what feeds the mould. If mould/mildew appears, a deck washing product and a detergent can be used. Never mix any other cleaners with the deck washing product. Vinegar can be used to kill the mould.

Rust stains/stubborn spots

Use a cleaning product containing oxalic or phosphoric acid base to lighten or remove the rust or dirt. Product may need to sit on stain 10-15 minutes.

Ice and snow

If you reside in a cold weather climate and would like to avoid accumulating snow/ice on your ECO Hollow deck, use calcium chloride or safety rock salt to melt it. Remove the ice and snow with a plastic or wood shovel as it begins to melt.

Oil and Grease Stains

As soon as the spill has occurred, use hot water and dishwashing detergent, to remove the stain. Be sure to thoroughly rinse the detergent off the deck with hot water. If need be, use a light stainless steel scourer.

Berries and Wine Stains

Mix bleach into hot water according to the bleach-packaging label. Scrub the stain lightly and rinse thoroughly. The stain may not disappear entirely.

Ink Stains

Inks may be permanent. However, scrubbing with hot soapy water may lighten the stain. Rinse thoroughly.
